Hockey Match Recap: Djurgården Defeats Björklöven 5-3 in Sold-Out Court

The court was sold out. Tifot was magical. Djurgården and Björklöven did not disappoint many with the hockey entertainment in the premiere.

– Good framing here as usual. Good pressure. Which we get to taste. Djurgården gains momentum from it and presses us down really hard. I can accept that it looks like that for the first five to ten minutes, but then we have to gather courage and manage to play in this hall. I think we’ll be sloppy with the puck. I don’t want to diminish anything from Djurgården’s effort at all, but we play recklessly with the puck, says Björklöven coach Viktor Stråhle disappointed after the 5-3 loss against Djurgården.

The home team had 2–0, but Löven turned in the third period to 3–2. Before Djurgården came back and made a move and went away to 5–3.

Djurgården dominated, as Stråhle said, the beginning of the match, but Björklöven had a lot of powerplay and could have used it better.

– In the second period they have the power play and they have five against three and there I have to give our team a big compliment, especially all those who kill the expulsions and do it fantastically well. We don’t really allow any danger, says Djurgården’s coach Johan Garpenlöv with satisfaction.

Djurgården played with six backs and has both Axel Andersson and Alexander Ytterell back from injuries. But five minutes into the second period, Andersson received a match penalty for a cross-checking in the head of Björklöven’s Fredric Weigel.

– It’s a match penalty. It’s clear it’s a match penalty, Garpenlöv admits.

Do you think it will lead to suspension?

– I don’t expect anything. I’m just saying it was a match penalty.

The head referee Daniel Wessner tells HockeyNews afterwards:

– We have a fifth on the ice. They take a look at it in the situation room and then forward it to the reference group and see if it goes any further. That’s where it’s at.

As of this season, the referees do not need to grade the match penalty, but it is up to the situation room afterwards to decide whether a case should proceed to the disciplinary committee and then takes help from the people in the reference group.

Wessner thinks the change is good.

– Yes, great. We have to do what we have to do out there, then let’s move on. It’s better that it is.

What do you think of the pressure on Hovet?

– A fantastic premiere! It’s crazy fun when it’s framed like this.

Djurgården risks getting rid of Axel Andersson and then has five regular defenders because Calle Odelius is at NHL camp. They also have the Tyresö/Hanviken loan Oscar Lundin, who got ice time when Axel Andersson received a match penalty.

– We have eight slopes that we think are good of course, otherwise they wouldn’t be here. Now we will see during the season how they play and if it feels like we need someone else. Now we’ll see if we lose Axel a few more games. That decision will hopefully come over the weekend. I think our back end feels better than last year. It feels more playable than last year. That is what we have been looking for and tried to do, says Johan Garpenlöv.

Djurgården’s Wiktor Nilsson scored two goals and Olle Liss scored the match-winning 4–3 goal.

– I think we play a really good match, says Garpenlöv.
