Anglers in Amersfoort are no longer allowed to use barbs when fishing from the new year. Lead-containing weights over 15 grams are also prohibited. The municipality has agreed this with the local fishing club, which has about three thousand members.
A barb on a fishing hook ensures that a fish is less likely to be released. This causes more suffering for the fish, something the municipality wants to counteract with this agreement together with the association.
“Fishing has a great influence on the welfare of fish. Barbs cause suffering for animals and it is good that the association wants to stop this,” says councilor Johnas van Lammeren (Animal Welfare and Sustainable Living Environment).
The agreements made will be enforced by the Amersfoort Hengelsportvereniging itself. Each association has its own inspectors. They check whether anglers have the correct documents and whether they comply with the fishing rules.
With the ban on the barb, Amersfoort is the first municipality to introduce such a measure. Previously, the municipality of Amsterdam also wanted to do it, but was unable to reach an agreement with the Amsterdam Angling Association. “An important step towards making Amersfoort’s waters more animal-friendly has been taken,” says councilor Van Lammeren.
