Pope Francis has called the Mediterranean Sea “a vast cemetery” where human dignity is buried.
“We are at a crossroads, on one side brotherhood, on the other the indifference that bleeds the Mediterranean Sea. We are at a crossroads of civilizations,” he said during his visit to Marseille.
He criticized the abhorrent traffic and the bigotry of indifference to the plight of those migrants shipwrecked in the Mediterranean who need to be rescued.
“We can no longer witness tragedies with shipwrecked migrants caused by the disgusting traffic and the fanaticism of indifference. People risk drowning when they are abandoned in the middle of the waves, they must be rescued. It is a human duty, it is a duty of civilization,” the Pope stressed.
The crossroads
“We are at a crossroads, on the one hand brotherhood, on the other the indifference that bleeds the Mediterranean Sea. We are at a crossroads of civilizations,” he added and criticized the country’s paralysis.
The pope made the remarks during a ceremony attended by representatives of other faiths in front of a memorial to sailors and migrants who have disappeared or died at sea. The Meromial rises at the foot of Marseille’s iconic Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde, which dominates Marseille.
