Roger Federer Meets with Bjorn Borg Ahead of Laver Cup: Team Europe’s Key Figures and Challenges

Roger Federer met with European team captain Bjorn Borg shortly before the start of the Laver Cup.

In the days leading up to the tournament, Roger Federer has been one of the key figures of the tournament, which will pit Team Europe against Team World. Although the Swiss tennis player retired a year ago, precisely at the 2022 Laver Cup, he has participated in the activities prior to this year’s tournament, which begins on Friday, September 22.

The co-founder of the Laver Cup met with the captain of Europe, former world number 1 Bjorn Borg, with whom he has shared moments in previous editions. Between 2017 and 2022, Borg led the European team to victory in the first four editions, but was defeated in 2022.

Federer played his last match alongside Rafael Nadal, and they fell to the French duo of Tiafoe and Jack Sock by a score of 6-4, 6-7(2), 9-11. This time, he was reunited with Bjorn Borg, who chose Federer for that final match.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion recently shared his impressions of the Laver Cup and gave advice to Team Europe. With the last minute withdrawals of world numbers 4 and 5, Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas, the team will only have two players ranked in the top 10 to lead them.

These players are Casper Ruud (9th) and Andrey Rublev (6th). However, Federer is unfazed and guides the team he has supported since 2017.

“I think it’s about thriving in the team environment, being well prepared and accepting a big crowd. It always depends on when you play, obviously, if it’s the first day or the second, but listen to those who have been there before.” at Copas Laver before, and they can give you good advice,” he said.

“I’m sure they will be fine. They are all excellent players, we are talking about world-class tennis players,” he added.
