When to Mow Your Lawn: A Guide for Year-Round Maintenance

A mowed lawn not only looks a lot neater, it is also very good for your lawn to continue to do this regularly. But until when can you actually mow? Throughout the year? Or is it better to take a mowing break when winter approaches? We’ll explain it to you.

Do not mow during frost

Regular mowing is important and can actually be done all year round, as long as it is dry and not freezing. When the blades of grass become too long, growth slows down and the grass stops making new shoots. These offshoots provide a beautiful, dense lawn and indirectly prevent moss growth.

In addition, regular mowing also ensures that all fallen leaves are removed from your lawn.

That’s how long the grass continues to grow

The grass continues to grow as long as there are favorable growing conditions for the grass. This has everything to do with the amount of nutrition and moisture, but also with the temperature of the soil. Grass grows at a soil temperature of 5 to 8°C. If there is a mild autumn, the grass will probably continue to grow for a while.

If the soil is 15 °C, the grass grows optimally. This is usually towards the end of spring. If the soil temperature is higher than 15°C (often in the middle of summer), the grass grows a lot slower. If the soil reaches a temperature of even above 25°C, the grass stops growing completely.

Mowing the lawn in the fall

If you are going to mow your lawn in the autumn, there are a number of things you should take into account:

Do not let the grass grow longer than 4.5 to 5 cm. Only mow the lawn when the weather is dry. Collect or rake the grass and remove it from your garden. Remove the fallen leaves from your lawn, unless there is a risk of night frost.
