Mysteries of the Cosmic Network: A New Look at the Origin of the Universe

Scientists received an award for a breakthrough in studying the cosmic structure of the Universe

Mikhail Ivanov (MIT), Oliver Philcox (Columbia University and Simons Foundation) and Marko Simonovic (University of Florence) became laureates New Horizons Prize in Physics. They were recognized for their contributions to understanding the large-scale structure of the Universe and the development of new tools for studying physics from surveys of galaxies.

The prestigious award is presented annually by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation to young scientists. Funding for the award is provided by prominent representatives of the technology world, including Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan, Mark Zuckerberg, Yuri and Yulia Milnerov and Anne Wojciski.

The main idea of the scientists’ research is to study the cosmological collider. According to the standard model of cosmology, after the Big Bang, the Universe began to form thanks to tiny disturbances. These initial particle interactions are recorded in a vast cosmic network, the shape of which indicates the primordial forces that shaped it.

Researchers are developing a new theory called effective field theory (EFT) for large structures. This tool helps scientists make test predictions about the earliest beginnings of the universe.

“These new ideas may generate new scientific hypotheses for future galactic surveys,” shared Marko Simonovic. “As new data begins to arrive in the coming years, it will be very exciting to see what new things we can learn about our Universe and what surprises lie ahead.”
