The president of the Culture Pass Sébastien Cavalier was traveling in Gard this Friday, September 22.
What was the purpose of your visit to Nîmes this Friday?
The idea was to meet the people of the City, the Metropolis, the Department and the cultural actors of the region to inform them of the latest developments of the Culture pass and to discuss with them on how they use it, to collect what works well or could be improved.
What did you get from these exchanges?
In the Gard department, what is very nice is to see that the system works well, that young people are using it well, with 37,000 registered. Just like cultural actors. now, the next step is to see with them how we can offer more “haute couture” things, exclusive offers for young people to which they would not have access without the Culture pass.
How do you see the possible evolution of the Culture pass?
The pass already covers a lot of areas, such as monuments, museums, concerts, libraries, live shows, visual arts, escape games, video games, VOD, online music, workshops, studio rental, etc. The field is very wide. Our challenge is that, on the one hand, all cultural actors are included in the pass to give them visibility. Then, it is to see how to ensure that cultural actors make exclusive proposals, more adapted to the way in which young people experience their cultural practice. Finally, we would like the pass which is made for young people to be made by young people, for them to become actors in the pass.
What does the pass represent in a city like Nîmes?
We have 9,300 young people registered and around a hundred cultural actors, such as the Sémaphore cinema, who are very happy with the system. We spoke with the Musée de la Romanité, the meeting gave them lots of ideas. With the City of Nîmes, which is going to launch its art triennial, we are in the process of seeing how to promote it to young audiences. We’re full of ideas!
How do you work to reach an ever-wider audience?
Today, if you take young people who are 19 years old and can therefore no longer register for the pass, we have 77% of young people who have been registered, which is not bad. But what we see is that we have more girls than boys, so we must move forward on that. We also did a study to understand why 18-year-olds had not registered. We realized that there were three issues: some thought that the pass was not for them, when the only conditions are to be between 15 and 18 years old and live on French soil. Then you have young people who say that culture does not interest them. However, if they like video games, escape games or concerts, they will find it on the pass. Finally, others find it too complicated to register. Whereas you either have to go through Educonnect if you are in school or otherwise via the app. We see that we still have work to do to break down these barriers.
