The Synod of Bishops will be held in early October. The Church Synod Secretariat contributes to the care of creation by providing a means of compensation to offset the residual CO2 emissions produced in synods
(Vatican News) On the eve of the publication of Pope Francis’s “new” encyclical Laudato Si’, the Secretariat of the Council of Churches intends to make its own contribution to the protection of creation, through a form of compensation that offsets the Residual CO2 emissions from the 16th Synod of Bishops. Through financial support from Save the Planet and technology provided by Lifegate, a portion of residual CO2 emissions will be used to balance the accumulated carbon “debt” through projects that generate carbon “credits”.
The projects chosen to compensate for CO2 emissions comply with the holistic ecological principles set out in the Encyclical Laudato Si’, linking ecology, concern for the earth, and concrete assistance for people who live on the planet. The program, already in place in Nigeria and Kenya, promotes efficient kitchen stoves and water purification technologies for households, groups and institutions. New technologies for cooking and boiling water will significantly reduce the consumption of non-renewable biomass and fossil fuels. These new technologies will also improve air pollution.
The carbon “credits” project will use revenue from the sale of carbon credits to help local partners involved in the production, distribution and repair of the technology. As Pope Francis wrote in the encyclical Laudato Si’: “In the past two hundred years, we have done more harm and damage to our common home than we have ever seen before. Yet we are called to Be an instrument of our God and Father, so that our earth may remain in the shape God loved it from the beginning of creation, consistent with his plan for peace, goodness and perfection.” (Ref. No. 53)
