Mohammad Shami’s Heroic Performance Leads India to Victory in First ODI Against Australia

Mohali: India reduced Australia to 276 runs in the first ODI when Mohammad Shami showed bravery by losing five wickets. Shami sent back five men after conceding 51 runs in the fifth over. India won the toss and sent the opponents to bat. David Warner (52 off 53 balls) was the top scorer for the visitors with a half-century. Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandra Ashwin took one wicket each. It is after 16 years that an Indian bowler takes five wickets in ODIs in his own country. This is the second time Shami has taken five wickets in ODIs.

The Aussies were in good shape at one stage. With only four runs on the scoreboard, Shami gave India a brilliant start by getting Mitchell Marsh (four) to the hands of Shubman Gill. However, when Warner and Steven Smith (41 off 60 balls) who stood cautiously and aggressively put together a partnership of 94 runs, Australia were at 98 runs for one wicket in 18.2 overs. Jadeja came to India’s rescue by dismissing Warner. Gill’s catch again. Warner’s half-century consisted of six fours and two sixes.

The Aussies were 112 for three after Shami dismissed Smith soon after. Marnes Labuschein (39 off 49 balls), who got off to a good start, was bowled by Ashwin. Rahul was stumped and dismissed. Cameron Green (31 off 52 balls), Josh Inglis (45 off 45 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (21 off 21 balls) fought back as Australia passed 200 in 41.5 overs.

Shami dismissed Stoinis and Mathew Short (two) in his successive overs before clean bowling Sean Abbott in the same over to complete his five-wicket haul. Captain Pat Cummins scored an unbeaten 21 off nine balls with two fours and a six in the last overs to take the visitors to 270. Australia were all out when Adam Sampa was caught in a run-out in the last ball of the third ball.
