On Friday, Ukraine launched a missile strike on the general headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, located in the center of the city of Sevastopol in Crimea, according to a local official, saying that he fears another strike.
The Russian-appointed governor of the Sevastopol administrative region, Mikhail Razvogayev, wrote on Telegram that “the enemy launched a missile attack on the fleet’s general headquarters.”
He pointed out that “a number of possible victims is being determined” and that debris fell near the adjacent Lunacharsky Theater.
The Russian official TASS agency reported that a large number of ambulances headed to the location. Pictures posted on social media showed a building on fire.
Russian authorities said they feared a new attack and called on residents to be cautious.
“I ask you to remain calm and not publish photos or videos” of the scene of the attack, where emergency services are active, Razvojayev said.
He added in another post, “A new attack is possible. Do not come to the city center, stay inside the buildings. For those close to the fleet headquarters, go to shelters if you hear the sirens.”
The Russian Black Sea Fleet is stationed in the port of Sevastopol, which is one of the command centers for Russian operations against Ukraine.
On July 31, 2022, 6 people were injured as a result of an explosive drone strike on this headquarters, an imposing white building in the classical style, located in the center of Sevastopol near parks and museums visited by many people.
The Crimean Peninsula, and Sevastopol in particular, has been targeted for several weeks by Ukrainian attacks carried out by air and sea marches on ships and military infrastructure in defiance of Russian naval and air defenses.
This is the second attack in less than 10 days targeting the headquarters of the Russian fleet in the Crimean Peninsula.
On September 13, the Russian authorities said that Ukraine launched 10 missiles and 3 drone boats in an attack on the headquarters of its fleet in the Black Sea in the Crimean Peninsula.
Russia reported at the time that the attack resulted in a major fire breaking out in a shipyard in Sevastopol, wounding 24 people.
The Moscow-appointed governor, Mikhail Razvozaev, claimed that most of the targets attacking Crimea were intercepted.
Russia said that two of its ships were damaged as a result of being hit by cruise missiles.
