Home / General / Innovation Potential of Liquid Waste as a Source of Environmentally Friendly Fertilizer
KuatBaca.com – Industry, households and the agricultural sector often produce liquid waste which poses a threat to the environment, especially water resources. However, a new breakthrough shows that this waste is not just a problem, but also an opportunity. In fact, liquid waste can now be converted into a high-value product: environmentally friendly nitrogen fertilizer.
1. Nitrogen Fertilizer from Liquid Waste: A Revolution
Nitrogen fertilizers play an important role in world agriculture. Even though nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere, its form cannot be directly absorbed by plants. Traditional nitrogen fertilizer production is an energy-intensive process and is a significant cause of carbon dioxide emissions. However, there is an alternative that is more environmentally friendly and efficient, namely by utilizing liquid waste.
Patrick Gurian, a distinguished professor at Drexel, emphasized that utilizing liquid waste to produce nitrogen fertilizer is not only a brilliant solution, but also a step towards a sustainable nitrogen economy. In other words, we can get nitrogen without additional energy costs, while reducing our carbon footprint.
2. Process of converting liquid waste into ammonia
In separate research, scientists from various parts of the world, including from Rice University, have developed a method to convert nitrates in industrial wastewater into ammonia. The procedure involves adding electricity to a single-atom catalyst, converting wastewater into ammonia.
Haotian Wang, one of the key scientists behind this research, emphasized that this new technology allows the transformation of waste into valuable products without producing additional emissions. He also added that this technology is more efficient compared to traditional methods that use fossil fuels.
3. Future Challenges and Expectations
Although these findings are very promising, there are still several challenges that need to be overcome. One of them is increasing the efficiency and stability of catalysts for large-scale applications. In addition, researchers plan to conduct experiments with industrial wastewater which has a more complex composition.
This research, which has been published in the journal Nature Communications, shows the great potential of liquid waste in supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture. Hopefully, with this innovation, we can see a future where waste is not only considered a problem, but also a solution to our global challenges.
