Neutering and Vaccination Operation for Dogs and Cats in Salvador Mazza, Salta: ProTenencia’s Responsible Pet Ownership Program

Through ProTenencia, the National Responsible Pet Ownership Program of the Ministry of Health of the Nation, a team of veterinary professionals is developing a neutering and vaccination operation for dogs and cats in the border town of Salvador Mazza, in the Province from Salta.

The initiative, which began on September 19 and runs until tomorrow, aims to neuter 350 dogs and cats, understanding that animal overpopulation of urban pet fauna impacts public health. In parallel, a talk on “Promotion of animal health” was also held at the Salvador Mazza Hospital for 70 health agents, which was given by veterinary professionals and headed by the national coordinator of the Protenencia Program, Juan Enrique Romero.

The operation is framed under the concept of “One Health”, which contemplates addressing human, animal and environmental health in an interdisciplinary, inter-institutional and inter-professional manner at the local, national and global level, in order to promote the well-being of people, animals and the environment.

The vaccination of dogs and cats that is carried out in the different municipalities every year for free, with the supply of supplies by the Ministry of Health, seeks to fight against rabies in companion animals. It is a disease transmitted by bite or contact with a sick animal and has no cure once signs and symptoms develop in the affected central nervous system.

In that sense, the North of Argentina, and particularly the border area with the Plurinational Republic of Bolivia, has always demanded particular attention in relation to this issue, which is why tasks are carried out jointly with our neighboring country with the objective to combat the threat of this disease.

It is worth remembering that World Rabies Day will take place on September 28 in commemoration of the death of Louis Pasteur, a French scientist who discovered the anti-rabies vaccine. This is an opportunity to promote the fight against the disease, increase awareness about its prevention, commemorate the achievements made and redouble efforts to combat this disease through a present and active State.
