The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) sent a letter to residents of Zwolle today (Thursday) reporting that the Asian tiger mosquito has been spotted in the area. At least some residents in Stadshagen have received such a letter.
The Asian tiger mosquito was reportedly spotted in Stadshagen on September 8. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) asks Zwolle residents whether more specimens have been seen before they decide whether to combat the mosquito. The municipality of Zwolle and the GGD have now been informed.
The Asian tiger mosquito can transmit tropical infectious diseases. ‘This has not yet happened in the Netherlands,’ says the NVWA, ‘and the chance is very small because the diseases are virtually non-existent in our country. However, it is important that the tiger mosquito does not settle here.’
In the immediate vicinity of the site in Zwolle – it is not said where this is – the NVWA will search for mosquito larvae and will also place bait traps in residential areas. In any case, people in the Mossen neighborhood of Stadshagen live within 100 meters of the location of the Asian tiger sparrow. Residents’ gardens may be inspected.
