The burned-out ship Fremantle Highway left Groningen’s Eemshaven after seven weeks. Port director Cas König looks back RTV North back on an eventful period.
The ship left the quay at 3 p.m. and is on its way to Rotterdam, where it should arrive about 36 hours later. The Fremantle Highway is transported under strict conditions. “It is towed by at least four tugboats and there must be two sheds around it. There must also be daylight and calm weather. We do not impose such requirements on every departing ship,” says König.
Fremantle Highway
The car transport ship caught fire north of Ameland last July. One crew member was killed. Some of the 23 crew members were injured.
There were almost 3,800 cars on board that were allowed to burn out in a controlled manner. The burning ship was then towed to a temporary location 16 kilometers north of Schiermonnikoog and Ameland. Here the ship could be at a greater distance from shipping traffic.
In early August the ship was shipped to Eemshaven in Groningen and by September 8, all 3,784 cars had been disembarked on the Fremantle Highway. The ship could remain in Eemshaven until mid-October at the latest due to the arrival of a cruise ship, but it already left for Rotterdam today. There the ship is further dismantled.
König is relieved that the ship is gone, especially because of everything that could have gone wrong. The ship could have sunk in the harbor mouth or in the harbor itself.
“Imagine if that had happened. Then the gas supply of the Netherlands, via the Ing ships in the port, would also have immediately run into problems. I received quite a few concerned phone calls when it became clear that the ship was coming to us .”
Prevent disaster
The director held his breath for seven weeks, because he preferred not to have the ship in his port at all. “You bring a lot of uncertainty into the port. For the first time and also under great time pressure. This happens so rarely that you have to learn from it as much as possible.”
“It remains a disaster ship, from which someone jumped off and died. We are especially pleased that a further disaster for the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site has been prevented.”
