The House of Representatives does not want public transport to become more expensive next year. Almost all parties are calling on the outgoing cabinet to prevent the expected price increases in regional public transport and the NS.
In mid-August it became clear that the NS has received permission from the cabinet to increase prices by 3.5 percent next year. This increase is in addition to the usual inflation adjustment. On a fare of 20 euros, an additional 1.32 euros would be added.
This month it was announced that tickets for the metro, tram and bus are also becoming more expensive. Carriers are faced with higher costs, including for personnel and energy. That’s why they raise prices considerably.
The House of Representatives now wants to prevent that. A motion by GroenLinks-PvdA and the Christian Union has parliamentary support. The parties want people throughout the Netherlands to be able to count on affordable and good public transport.
The costs of stopping price increases are estimated at 420 million euros in total. As far as the House is concerned, a large part of this must be paid from a pot of money for measures that have not yet been developed. These could, for example, be agreements from the coalition agreement that have not yet been implemented.
The House will debate the outgoing cabinet’s Budget Day plans on Thursday. On Wednesday it became clear that there are also many parties that want to scrap the planned tax increase on petrol and diesel. It is not yet clear whether there is a majority in favor of this.
