A motion to arrest Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was passed.
The National Assembly held a plenary session on the afternoon of the 21st and voted on the motion to arrest Representative Lee, which was passed with 149 votes in favor, 136 against, 6 abstentions, and 4 votes invalid.
Among the 298 registered members of the National Assembly, 295 people participated in the vote, excluding Representative Lee Jae-myung, who is hospitalized after fasting, Foreign Minister Park Jin of the People Power Party who is accompanying President Yoon Seok-yeol’s visit to the United States, and three independent lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok, who is in prison.
The arrest motion requires the attendance of a majority of the registered members and the approval of a majority of the members present to be passed, but in this vote, one more vote was received than the quorum for passing (148 people).
Assuming that lawmakers from the People Power Party, the Justice Party, and the Era Transition Party are in favor, it is estimated that about 30 members of the Democratic Party were in favor.
As the motion for arrest of Representative Lee has been passed, whether or not Representative Lee will be detained will be decided through a court warrant review.
On the 18th, the prosecution requested an arrest warrant for CEO Lee, linking the suspicion of preferential treatment for the development of Baekhyeon-dong and the Ssangbangwool remittance case to North Korea.
Representative Lee effectively requested the rejection of the arrest motion through Facebook, saying, “The passage of the arrest motion will give wings to the investigation of the political prosecution’s manipulation.”
