Mistakes Made: Tottenham Chairman Acknowledges Hiring Mourinho and Conte was a Wrong Move

Tottenham football chairman Daniel Levy has admitted the hiring of coaches Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte was a mistake. According to Reuters, he said this at a meeting with fans.

Mourinho managed the London team from 2019 to 2021 when he replaced the popular Mauricio Pochettino. Conte was on the Hotspur bench from 2021 to 2023. Both came in to help Tottenham end their wait for a first trophy since 2008, but neither managed to do so.

“I was influenced by pressure from disgruntled fans and maybe some players. That we have to spend to win and that we have to have a big name on the bench,” Levy said.

“Mauricio and I were very close to the trophy, we had great times. But it didn’t work out, so we changed our strategy and bet on big names. We did it twice and learned from our mistakes,” he added.

Since this June, Tottenham has been led by Ange Postecoglou, with whom, according to Levy, the club has returned to its roots. “Conte and Mourinho are great coaches, but probably not for our club,” he said.

“Not for what we want and what style we want to play. And if it means that the journey will take us a little longer, then that’s fine. That’s why I think the arrival of Ange was the only right solution,” he added.

At least the entry into the new season of the English league proves him right. Tottenham are second after five rounds with 13 points and their only loss is a 2-2 draw with Brentford. They are two points behind defending champions Manchester City.
