More at the time than today, being part of the Marvel team ensured a huge career springboard that could change a life forever: this was exactly the case for Chris Evans, the famous interpreter of Captain America, who is rightly returned to this crucial period in an interview.

A man and doubts

The first superheroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are undoubtedly roles apart: they directly participated in founding a cinematographic empire, exploding the careers of some of their actors. We can obviously cite Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark – arguably the true figurehead of the MCU until Avengers Endgame – but also Chris Hemsworth in that of Thor… or Chris Evans in that of Captain America.

During a long interview with QG, the American actor gave a long retrospective of his career, also addressing his different ways of seeing things depending on the era. And before accepting the role of Steve Rogers, the hesitation was real: Chris Evans was simply wondering about his acting career itself, and how it might impact his personal life.

I was very apprehensive about accepting the role. I remember that at the end of my twenties, I felt a real change in the way I approached filming, promoting films: a little more anxiety, doubts. You always end up wondering if you should really do this.

I no longer knew if I was getting closer to myself or if I was moving away from it. A little voice inside me constantly told me that it was rather the second option, that something about this environment was not healthy.

A crucial choice

Then, Marvel offered him the role of Captain America. Even though the MCU wasn’t yet what it is today (Captain America’s Firt Avenger was released in 2011 and was only the fifth film in the Expanded Universe), Chris Evans knew this position could change his life and career. For good…and bad.

I weighed the pros and cons. The pros: I could shelter my family forever; the cons: fame and lack of control risked making me deeply unhappy.

We know the rest: he obviously accepted Marvel’s offer, signing a contract to play the character in numerous films and for many years.

When you revisit a role so often, you can’t help but measure certain traits of his personality that you have more or less unconsciously integrated.

This is what made these Marvel films so charming. You’re never really the center of it. Including sometimes in your own films. Quentin Tarantino talked about this recently and I thought, he’s right. The character is the star. You are there, but you do not carry the film on your shoulders.

So what, would the public like Captain America more than Chris Evans? The question is real and this is precisely what Quentin Tarantino said about the Marvelization of the industry: for the filmmaker, this is an industry that makes star characters, but not star actors. “All these actors who became famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars, right? The star is Captain America. Or Thor.”, declared some time ago. The debate is open…
