She is only the seventh woman to win this award. Grenoble ecologist Sandra Lavorel received the 2023 CNRS gold medal, the organization announced this Thursday in a press release. The scientist affiliated with Grenoble alpine ecology laboratory is rewarded for her work on “contributions of biodiversity to human life“, specifies the National Center for Scientific Research. The native Lyonnaise has made it possible, thanks to her work, to show “that changes in climate and land use affect the morphology and physiology of plants, and how these adaptations have effects on the ecosystems to which they belong“, explains the CNRS.
Work on the effects of global warming
Among the researcher’s work at the CNRS, there is the Warm project. This device installed on the Col du Lautaret, in the Hautes-Alpes, at an altitude of 2,400 meters, warms the ambient air by a few degrees to study its consequences on the ecosystem. This research allows, among other things, “allow us to understand the functioning and dynamics of ecosystems in response to the global changes we are facing“, writes Antoine Petit, CEO of the CNRS.
The scientist, already an officer of the National Order of Merit and officer of the Legion of Honor, will receive this award on December 20 at the Maison de la Chimie, in Paris. She will allow Sandra Lavorel to touch 50.000 euros.
