Mother Teresa of Calcutta said that every hour of worship makes our soul more radiant in heaven. Precisely, if there is a phenomenon in the Church that has emerged in recent times, it is that of Eucharistic adoration.
Examples like Hakuna, with its Holy Hours, they give a good account of it. Although many parishes usually have worship at certain times of the day, it is the chapels of the Missionaries of the Most Holy Eucharist (AEP) that continue to increase.
Many fruits
Where a chapel is established Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, “the graces that the Lord pours out are impossible to know.” There is testimonies of conversions, conflictive areas that cease to be conflictive, Eucharistic piety and active participation in the Holy Mass increase, the need for periodic confession becomes evident, etc.
In Spain there is already 71 chapels, and very soon number 72 will be reached, with which it will open in the Maresme Region (Barcelona). But what is Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration (PEA)? what is your mission? Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in a place exclusive for it.
Wherever a chapel is established, there are conversions, Eucharistic piety increases, etc.
While many churches close, worship chapels remain open like beacons of light. It is supported by lay people, who can register to participate, and always hand in hand with the teaching of the Church. Many Popes have recommended them, especially the last three.
“The mode safer and more effective way to establish lasting peace on earth is through the great power of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration,” said Saint John Paul II on December 2, 1981, when he inaugurated the AEP chapel in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica.
It’s not a luxury, it’s a priority
Saint John Paul II himself, in a letter, on the occasion of the open chapel in the Sanctuary of Łagiewniki, said: “I am glad that on this Sunday the perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins. There is nothing that makes the work of Mercy more present in the worldwhich was realized through the cross and the resurrection of the Lord, like the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist”.
While Benedict XVI noted that “worship is not a luxury, it is a priority… Without worship there will be no transformation of the world.”
For his part, Pope Francis told the Claretians, on September 11, 2015: “In the world of efficiency we have lost the sense of adoration. Even in prayer, it is not true, we pray, we praise the Lord, we ask , we appreciate it. But worship, being before the only God, of that which is the only thing that has no price, that is not negotiated, that is not changed… And everything that is outside of Him is an imitation of cardboard, it is an idol. To adore. At this stage make an effort to grow in this mode of prayer: adoration. Worship, worship God.”
“Worship is not a luxury, it is a priority… Without it there is no transformation of the world.”
The initial promoter of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration was San Pedro Julian Eymardfounder of the Sacramentines, although although there were laymen, it was fundamentally supported by the Sacramentines Religious and over time this declined.
In the 60s, the priest Martín Lucía, a religious of the Sacred Hearts, felt the desire to promote the AEP, he went into isolation and Pope Saint Paul VI gave him authorization to promote it in the world. It began in the United States, where the first chapel took 4 yearsthen went to the Philippines, where the global launch took place, opening hundreds of chapels.
Martín Lucía founded a community of apostolic life made up of priests and deacons. Some lay people also participated in the missions. The priest Justo Lofeudo, member of his community was the introducer in Spainafter having been to Mexico and other countries.
When were these types of chapels born in Spain? Perpetual adoration began in 2004 with the first chapel in a neighborhood of Estepona (Málaga). From there, the opening of chapels in Madrid and Toledo began.
Who encourages the creation of these chapels?
Behind the creation of these chapels are the Missionaries of the Holy Eucharist. A public clerical association of diocesan law, which Its charisma is the promotion, organization and foundation of perpetual adoration in the parishes and in the dioceses.
This association was established by Dominique Rey, bishop of Fréjus-Toulon on July 17, 2007 in Paray-le-Monial. Various priests, religious and lay people, in France and abroad, are part of this association with their different realities. This association appoints missionary delegates who are in charge of coordinating each chapel.

What is the process of creating a chapel like? Wherever a chapel calls them, they go. The request comes through a call from the diocese, from a parish priest who wants it in his parish. or by a group of secularists who insist. A priest is needed who has permission from his bishop. A mission is then carried out, and announcements are made at all masses, inviting people to choose a day and time of worship.
When there is a sufficient number, a place adapted for it is sought, whose mission is solely and exclusively perpetual adoration. The chapel is never closed except during the Easter Triduum. Although the chapel is autonomous from the parish, an important link is always generated with it. Currently it is estimated that there may be more than 5,000 adoration chapels in the world.
Who can participate in worship? Anyone who wants it. On many occasions there are non-religious people who stand in front of the Holy Sacrament and are transformed after a moment of special meditation. No special qualities are required, “the main thing is to open yourself to the gift of God.”
There are currently 71 chapels open in Spain, and the one in Comarca de El Maresme is on mission, which will be the 72nd.
