Oprah Winfrey took the trendy weight loss medications Ozempic and Wegovy to task in an insightful panel discussion. “Shouldn’t we all just be more accepting, whatever body we’re in? That should be your decision,” she said during Oprah DailyThe panel discussion “The Life You Want Class: The State of Weight” was recently held. “Even when I first heard about the weight loss medications, I was having knee surgery at the same time, and I felt like, ‘I have to do this alone,'” she continued PEOPLE. “Because if I take the medication, it’s the easy way out.”
Oprah reportedly noted that she was “shamed in the tabloids every week for about 25 years” because she “didn’t have the willpower” to lose weight quickly and dramatically. “You all know I’ve been on this journey most of my life,” she said elsewhere in the conversation TODAY. “My peak weight was 237 pounds. I don’t know if there is another public figure whose weight struggle has been as exploited as mine over the years. So I’m ready for this conversation.”

psychologist Dr. Rachel Goldman, Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford And Dr. Melanie JayHe also took part in the discussion with the media tycoon. Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford said she never uses the term “willpower” with her patients. “It’s hard to see you as marginalized as you were,” she said of obesity. “Because this isn’t about willpower. It’s not your fault. It is in the way our body regulates weight and each of us is different, each of us is unique, not one is superior to the other. We’re just different, and if we respond to those differences and address the differences in population heterogeneity, we will actually make changes in this disease.” She added that “obesity is a chronic disease.”
Oprah closed the circle with the hope for a better attitude towards weight and individual weight loss paths. “It should be yours and you shouldn’t be ashamed of it,” she said. “As a person who has been shamed for so many years, I’m just sick of it. I’m just tired of it. I’m just tired of it. And I hope that conversation starts with shame.”
