The Belgian composer and singer Lou Depreix, whose most famous composition “Ca plane pour moi” became a global hit at the end of the 70s, has passed away at the age of 77, but was later included in the repertoire of the group “Red Hot Chili Peppers” and other stars.
Depreik has had health problems and was recently treated in a hospital in Brussels.
The musician passed away on Tuesday, the newspaper “Brussels Times” reports.
Depreiks, born in 1946 in Lesin, in the Walloon part of Belgium, gained a lot of attention in Belgian music life in the 70s and 80s.
Since 1963, approximately 20 million Depreika records have been sold, reports the “Brussels Times”. He is one of the most commercially successful Belgian music artists.
In 1977, “Ca plane pour moi” was in the top ten of the charts in Great Britain, the Netherlands, West Germany, Australia and New Zealand, and in the first place in France and Switzerland. In Belgium it reached the 11th place.
Although Depreiks composed and sang the song, as well as being its producer, it was performed by another Belgian musician, Plastik Bertrand. According to one version, this happened because Bertrand had a more appropriate visual image for the song to be a commercial success.
The question of the authorship of the song was heard in the courts in later years.
According to the Brussels Times, the single has sold 900,000 copies worldwide and is considered a “punk, new wave and pop classic”.
Cover versions of the song have also been recorded by the groups “Sonic Youth” and “Red Hot Chili Peppers”. It was heard in Coca-Cola commercials and in films such as The Wolf Of Wall Street and Jackass 3.5.
