German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke at a meeting of the UN General Assembly in front of an almost empty hall. Bild magazine reports this.
Scholz addressed the entire world, calling for fundamental reform of the UN Security Council. He criticized “the fact that the Security Council, with its permanent members US, Russia, China, France and the UK, does not reflect the position of the world.” According to him, “Africa deserves more weight, as does Asia and Latin America.”
As the magazine explained, “the room is only truly full when the President of the United States speaks; with all subsequent speakers, it becomes increasingly empty.” Thus, during the annual UN debates, each country is allowed to make a 15-minute speech, and the order is clearly regulated: Brazil always comes first, then the United States. And if the president Joe Biden spoke in the morning, when the hall was full, then Scholz – late in the evening, when almost no one was left in the audience.
On September 5, the 78th session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York. September 19-23 is a high-level week in which presidents, heads of government and foreign ministers participate. Russia is represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.
