A US State Department spokeswoman confirmed on Wednesday that the ministry is aware of reports about the killing of Oman Darwish, the person responsible for organizing the People’s Protection Units in the Syrian Manbij region.
The spokeswoman said in statements to Al-Hurra website: “We continue to urge all parties to stop the escalation immediately.”
She explained: “The escalation in Syria is dangerous and threatens the safety of civilians. It also destabilizes the areas liberated from ISIS and undermines our common goal of ensuring that ISIS does not emerge again.”
On Tuesday, Turkish intelligence announced the killing of Darwish, noting that she had joined the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in 1998, and “was one of the leaders of the so-called unit that was created to carry out operations in major cities in Turkey, and supervised the organization of the operations planned to be carried out against Turkey from From Syria”.
Ankara considers the People’s Protection Units, which are under the banner of the Syrian Democratic Forces and supported by the international coalition to fight ISIS, an extension of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, and classifies them as terrorist.
The sources indicated that Turkish intelligence monitored Darwish, who was responsible for operations against the forces operating in the areas of the “Euphrates Shield” and “Olive Branch” operations in northern Syria.
It confirmed that “intelligence neutralized the terrorist” Darwish and her guards in an operation in the Manbij region, according to what the Turkish statement reported.
