Najwa Shihab explained the reasons for joining the independent team football anti-mafia task force. Independence is the main reason for being actively involved in improving football.
This independent team was introduced PSSI at Danareksa Tower, Jakarta, Wednesday (20/9/2023). Maruarar Sirait was appointed as chairman who will be assisted by Akmal Marhali, Ardan Adiperdana, including Najwa himself.
Najwa wants to ensure that this task force is an independent team that cannot be intervened by anyone, including PSSI. In the past few years, he has been vocal about the acute problems occurring in Indonesian football through his journalistic work
“When asked by Mas Erick Thohir, the first thing I asked was whether this was independent and Mas Erick gave a guarantee of independence,” said Najwa when giving a statement.
Najwa Shihab said this independence was very crucial for the task force in dismantling the practices of the football mafia. Erick, said Najwa, also invited the task force to investigate if there were any indications of the involvement of the PSSI management and even the General Chairperson in this issue.
“That’s what Mas Erick gave the guarantee, even to the extent that there were indications of involvement, not just the current management, even the PSSI Chairman himself was openly questioned,” said Najwa.
Najwa said that this openness was quite an encouraging change in the governance of the Indonesian football federation. Najwa said this was different from PSSI in the past which seemed to close itself off from the aspirations of football fans.
“In the past, the federation closed itself off and thought this was just a football family affair. So in the past, if PSSI reported a case, the tendency was to report it back,” continued Najwa.
Whereas, Najwa Shihab convey that football does not belong to one party, be it PSSI, FIFA, clubs, but belongs to all football fans. With a number of breakthroughs, Najwa hopes PSSI Today is different from previous eras.
“After there was a further role from the state apparatus, but also the federation opened itself to jointly see what existing problems were and fix them, this was not only due to encouragement from outside, but also intention and encouragement from within,” said Najwa.
