PP-DB Co-chairman Resigns Amid Disagreement over Merger of Civilian and Military Intelligence Services

PP-DB co-chairman Atanas Atanasov resigned as chairman of the parliamentary committee responsible for overseeing special services and the use of SRS.

The reason is the refusal of the leader of GERB-SDS, Boyko Borisov, to support the initiative of the right to merge civilian and military intelligence into a single service. “I personally believe that the services should not be merged,” he answered a journalist’s question on the subject on Monday.

And this is a childhood idea of Atanasov, which he has been promoting for years. Now his colleagues on the right are threatening to reform the security sector in order to cleanse it of Russian influence. This is where Atanasov’s proposal fits in. It will allow the current heads of the State Intelligence Agency and the Military Information Service, appointed during the administration of President Rumen Radev, to be released and replaced by a person named by the current ruling majority.

A little later, after it became known about Atanasov’s resignation, the leading MP from the DPS, Delyan Peevski, also refused to support his initiative. Last week, he announced the exact opposite – he promised principled support for the proposal that the right-wing politician had agreed with him. But now it’s gone. “It has already been understood by GERB that there will be no support. We have also discussed. Provided that there will not be a majority, we will not support either,” said Peevski. According to him, this development will not shake the government.

Thus, the commission for the special services was left without a leader, since Atanasov had no vice-chairmen. There will be no shortage of candidates to take over his position – its members are the deputy head of GERB Daniel Mitov, the former interior minister Boyko Rashkov, now an MP from the PP-DB, and the leader of the BSP Kornelia Ninova.
