His physical mobility is limited: he can only move his eyes and fingertips.
A Japanese DJ who suffers from a degenerative disease, similar to that of British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, controls music through brain waves that are then analyzed with artificial intelligence to interpret his thoughts.
Muto Masatane was only 27 years old when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This incurable disease affects nerve cells and gradually takes away control of their muscles. The young man thought his life was over. However, he began working with experts to develop technology that would expand the scope of what his body could still do.
His physical mobility is very limited, as he can only move his eyes and fingertips, but with the help of advanced technology that deciphers brain waves and eye movements, as a DJ he has managed to control music, visual effects and some robotic arms.
Under the stage name EYE VDJ MASA, Masatane performs live at music festivals both in Japan and abroad. This year he was one of the most anticipated artists of MoveFest 2023. Likewise, he participated in the opening ceremony of the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
