On September 18, local time, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya issued a statement saying that after the floods in Libya, the local drinking water sources were contaminated, and the poor sanitary conditions raised concerns about the spread of diseases. United Nations agencies and Libyan authorities are taking measures to prevent the outbreak.

Libyan health official Haider al-Sayeh said in an interview with the media on the 16th local time that in the hardest-hit eastern city of Derna, at least 150 people, including 55 children, have developed diarrhea due to drinking contaminated water.

Osman Abdul-Jalil, the health department official of the eastern Libyan regional authority, said on the 17th local time that vaccinations have begun in the disaster area to “prevent diseases that often occur after such disasters.”

Hurricane Daniel made landfall on the Mediterranean coast of eastern Libya on the 10th and caused flooding. The Abu Mansour Dam and the Birad Dam on the Derna River collapsed under the impact of floods, causing heavy casualties in the downstream city of Derna.

Data from the International Organization for Migration on the 18th local time showed that more than 40,000 people were displaced by floods in northeastern Libya, and the actual number may be higher. In addition, landmines and other munitions left over from years of conflict in Libya have been displaced by floods, posing potential risks to the victims. (Produced by Liu Yinghan)
