Scientific Study on the Renaissance Dam: Damages and Concerns – Muhammad Nassar

Books – Muhammad Nassar:

Dr. Abbas Sharaqi, Professor of Geology at Cairo University, republished part of a scientific study on the Renaissance Dam, which was presented in May 2011.

Sharaqi said that the study was conducted at a time when no information was available about the dam except for the storage capacity of 74 billion cubic meters, as part of the proceedings of the Cairo University International Conference in May 2011.

The study mentioned the expected damages of the Renaissance Dam, which are as follows:

1- The high cost, estimated at $4.8 billion, which is expected to reach $8 billion.

2- Flooding about half a million acres of forest land and irrigable agricultural land, which are rare in the Blue Nile Basin, in the formation of the dam lake, with no other nearby irrigable areas.

3- Flooding some mining areas for many important minerals such as gold, platinum, iron, copper, and some quarry areas.

4- Displacement of about 30,000 citizens from the Beheira region.

5- The short life of the dam, which ranges between 25 and 50 years, as a result of severe siltation (420 thousand cubic meters annually) and the resulting major problems for electricity generation turbines and a gradual decrease in the dam’s efficiency.

6- Increasing the chances of the dam collapsing as a result of geological factors and the rapid flow of the Blue Nile’s waters, which on some days “September” reach more than half a billion cubic meters per day, from a height of more than 2,000 meters and about 600 meters at the dam. If that happens, the greatest damage will be. It will hit Sudanese villages and cities, especially Khartoum, which may be swept away by water in a manner similar to the 2011 Japanese tsunami.

7- Increasing the chances of earthquakes occurring in the area where the reservoir is located due to the weight of water that was not present in the area before in a cracked rock environment.
