Nijinsky: A Thought-Provoking Contemporary Ballet Performance by Choreographer Marco Gecke

Already on the weekend – September 24 – at the theater house Sea Gate will be able to attend a contemporary ballet performance staged by choreographer Marco Gecke Nijinsky. The ballet of the Latvian National Opera tells about the life and work of the great dancer and choreographer Vaclav Nizhinsky, but at the same time reminds and makes you think about much broader topics. This show is special in its choreographic language.

The ballet performance reveals the most important moments of Nijinsky’s life on and off the stage, showing the close connection between art and madness. For ten years, Vaclav Nijinsky (1890–1950) was the director of the legendary Russian Ballet directed by Sergei Diaghilev (Russian Ballets) leading soloist and choreographer. His virtuoso jumps and androgynous charisma charmed the audience, while his daring choreography provoked scandals. The artist spent the last 30 years of his life in mental health institutions.

Marco Geke is one of the most recognized choreographers in the world today. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Hannover Ballet, Stuttgart Dance Company Gauthier Dance resident artist and associate choreographer at the renowned Dutch Dance Theatre. The choreographer creates new works for the leading European dance companies, including the Paris Opera Ballet, the Vienna State Ballet, the Bavarian State Ballet. Geke has created more than 60 works and received many international awards.

The show is financed by the European Regional Development Fund and Ventspils municipality. Tickets are available for purchase Ticket paradises at the cash registers.

This performance is thought provoking

Elsa Leimane, playing the role of Mother:

– It is with great pleasure that we go to guest performances – it is always a welcome event, it is the response of the audience and the warmth that we feel when we meet. This time I invite you to a ballet performance Nijinsky. Choreographer Marco Gecke’s language is unique. The production is very rich and full, showcasing the movement and language of the production. It may not be easy for everyone to understand – you are listening to a language you don’t speak, but its sound is intriguing. Marco Geke has managed to connect the path of art and madness, keeping in mind the smallest nuances that make this performance beautiful. Although the ten scenes played out are not very long, they are rich in terms of content and emotions. This time the performance of our troupe is different, until now the audience is not used to seeing us like this. The production required a lot of hard work from everyone to learn the language of extremely fast movements. The perception and point of view of the choreographer Marko Geke is very close to me. Looking at his works, watching how the artists move on stage, the feeling that you are looking at a person in real time disappears, it seems that the body is not capable of such a thing. The performance Nijinsky is a very emotional and felt performance. It makes you think a lot and admire at the same time.

A performance filled with anxiety

Aiden William Conefrey, Nijinsky:

– Creating this production was a big challenge for me, it was a very complicated process – a lot of movements, high speed, gestures, theatrical elements. The performance features beautiful music by Frédéric Chopin and Claude Debussy, however, the relationship with the music in this production is formed a little differently than usual in classical ballet – a whole is not formed between movements and notes. The performance is filled with anxiety, reproduced by the dancers’ quick hand movements. The role I played is very emotional – Nijinsky’s life story is played out on stage, experiencing different moments with body movements. In my opinion, the production becomes much easier to understand if you know Nijinsky’s life story. The audience will be able to watch 10 scenes and 10 ideas that will be expressed in dance. The performance will be something never seen before with a completely new way of expression.
