Deputy Chairman of PKB Jazilul Fawaid assessed the possibility 2024 presidential election which is only followed by two axes. A number of experts are pushing for the 2024 presidential election to be followed by at least three axes of power. Why?
“In terms of the configuration of votes and seats, there can be up to four pairs of presidential candidates. It’s just that the development of political dynamics today leads to three potential candidate pairs,” said Needem Advisory Council member Titi Anggraini to journalists, Tuesday (19/9/2023 ).
As a result of the nomination period being very long and tight with the voting stages, according to Titi, confirmation of the nomination was very slow and very full of controversial and speculative dynamics.
“Three candidate pairs can make the distribution of issues more widespread than just two candidate pairs. We have experience in the 2009 election with three candidate pairs and the 2014 and 2019 elections with only two candidate pairs,” he said.
With only two pairs of candidates in the presidential election, disintegrative polarization is considered to be strengthening and further weakening the civic culture among voters.
According to Titi, political parties should also really consider the public’s needs for alternative political choices that can make elections more dynamic and suppress identity hegemony and divisions in society.
“If you look at the development of efforts to form a coalition, it is very possible that political pragmatism will mean that the presidential election will only involve two pairs of candidates. Because the process that is taking place is elitist and far from public reach,” he said.
In line with Titi, the Executive Director of Indonesian Political Parameters, Adi Prayitno, believes that a presidential election with only two axes could threaten extreme polarization like the 2019 presidential election.
“Right now, in the midst of the election which is still a long time away, there is still the possibility of three axes, the divisions are still open. Mutual attacks between the camps are starting to appear. Especially in terms of hoax information and disinformation in plain sight,” he said.
According to Adi, it has become a public question mark as to why Jazilul suddenly talked about the possibility of two axes. This raises suspicions that Jazilul is not too sure that the Anies-Cak Imin or AMIN axis will sail in 2024.
“Because the other axis, namely Ganjar and Prabowo, seems to have very solid political support,” he said.
According to Adi, the formation of 2 axes in the presidential election may have occurred because of two things. First, Ganjar and Prabowo unite in a duet, but this possibility is very unlikely.
“Because Ganjar and Prabowo look equally powerful in facing the 2024 elections. Second, two axes will occur if the AMIN axis breaks up. So the head to head will be Ganjar vs Prabowo,” he said.
“But if you look at public trends, the 2024 presidential election will have three political axes so that people can enjoy a diverse and more varied menu of presidential candidates,” added Adi.
