(Text: Gabriel Zuzek) It usually happens that from an initial question a versatile scale is deployed that produces a sensation of being in front of windows that open to the radiance of a record, of a language that explodes in conjunction with a narrative that is linked to the playful. It is in the power of the explosion, then, where a bygone era is framed but that currently resonates with renewing force, charged with the present, and from that inflection point it will never again remain still.
The play “Perfume of champions (Life is a serious thing)”, by the writer, journalist and cultural manager Paul Citraro, rescues the relentless march of the almanac and as if this were not enough in an era marked by the trace of the immediate , finds the right form of the philosophy of a profession that chisels the pioneering theatrical spirit that the city of Venado Tuerto possesses.
And it happened in a bar, where else, that the question about what old age is about remained floating in the air impregnated with an eerie silence like that inert and apathetic moment in which a titan falls on the ring canvas.
The road as an excuse
Arrcho, Rojo, Mamet, Pipino and Mumia are the characters in this work, guided by the omniscient figure of Nancy, a charming nurse. They were, are and will be titans. But above all, popular titans of the ring who are going through the moment in which the splendor of past eras is missed.
But of course, those who know how to walk a ring always retain extra resistance and unfailingly refuse to be shod with an expiration date. And they train, always, because they are convinced that destiny will summon them again.
Then, when everything seemed sealed in the anomie of the Retirement House, the new nurse appears, obsessive in the way of caring and who will also become a confidant, a platonic girlfriend, a kind of mother and as if this were not enough, she will also serve as “priestess”. And then, everyday life for the Titans will once again take on a new meaning.
Cast and direction
“Perfume de Campeones” is directed by Roberto «’Nene» Corvatta. The actors summoned are Oscar Barotto (Friends of the Ideal Theater Association), Horacio “Ñoti” Martínez (Galpón del Arte), Agustín Di Mella (Grupo La Ventana), Andrés “Colo” Pieli and Carlos “Tato” Záttara (Teatro Malandra), and the special participation of Verónica Pipelo (Galpón del Arte). As relief actor: Raúl “Moli” Paulinovch. The play was written by cultural manager Paul Citraro, this being his second written work and his staging debut.
The importance of the meeting
The “Perfume of Champions” project was born from the Department of Experimental Dramaturgy of the Ideal Provincial Cultural Center of Venado Tuerto, under the tutelage of the playwright Fernando Ferrer and management of the Ministry of Culture of the Province.
Its relevance lies because the time of artistic activity added to each of them exceeds the quarter of a millennium: 268 years. Furthermore, because they are fundamental architects of cultural and theatrical activity in the last forty years in Venado Tuerto and the region. It should be noted that this project was promoted by different theater schools.
Dates and premieres
“Perfume de Campeones” will have a preview on Sunday, November 5, a sold-out date five months before the official premiere. The dates on the billboard will be November 10, debut for the public, November 14, 15, 16 and 17. For 2024, the work also plans a tour, in principle, throughout the province of Santa Fe.
