The Russian Ministry of Justice recently labeled Muratov a “foreign agent”. As a result, he temporarily resigned as editor of the independent newspaper Novaja Gazeta.
Russia’s president signed a decree on Monday transferring control of the printing plants to the authorities, reportedly only temporarily. Amedia gave away its printing facilities in five Russian cities to Muratov when they pulled out of the country last spring.
– With what we are now witnessing from the authorities on the Russian side in Ukraine, it is impossible for Amedia to continue the operation of the printing business in the country, stated CEO Anders Møller Opdahl of Amedia.
Novaja Gazeta printed its newspapers here for a period until they had to suspend domestic distribution last year.
Muratov expressed that he was very grateful to the printers from Ameida when they received them
– We at Novaja Gazeta welcome this wonderful resource with great gratitude. This will support free expression of opinion, and the profits will also go to that. Independent media is the antidote to war. We will take care of the open printing business and the employees, said Muratov.

Many of the newspaper’s journalists are currently working in exile from Latvia with a European edition of the newspaper. Dmitrij Muratov still lives in Russia, where, according to his own newspaper, he is trying to go to court to get rid of the foreign agent stamp.
The long-time editor was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 together with Filipina Maria Ressa. The two received the award for their courageous fight for freedom of expression.
