Germany’s Annalena Baerbock Labels Xi Jinping as a Dictator: Beijing’s Furious Response

Beijing

China made furious by the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) German Annalena Baerbock who mentioned the President Xi Jinping as a dictator. Beijing considers Baerbock’s label ‘absurd’ and an ‘open political provocation’.

As reported ReutersMonday (18/9/2023), Baerbock made this controversial comment in a direct interview with the media United States of America (AS), Fox Newslast week when he was asked about the war being sparked Russia in the region Ukraine.

“If (President Vladimir) Putin wins this war, what will that signal to other dictators in the world, like Xi, like the President of China?” said Baerbock, openly mentioning Xi’s name in the interview.

A strong protest was officially launched by the Beijing government against the Berlin authorities, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning calling Baerbock’s remarks ‘utterly absurd’ and a clear violation of China’s political dignity.

“This is an open political provocation,” said Mao at a press conference when responding to the German Foreign Minister’s statement regarding the Chinese President.

Baerbock is known as a harsh critic of China. Last August, Baerbock said Beijing was posing a challenge to ‘the very foundations of how we live together in this world’.

Earlier, he described aspects of his visit to China as “more than surprising” and said Beijing was increasingly becoming a systemic rival rather than a trading partner.
