The US Geological Survey reported on Monday that a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck northern Italy, about 44 kilometers away from the city of Florence, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

According to geologists and firefighters, the earthquake shook parts of the Italian region of Tuscany. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was near Maradi, northeast of Florence, and occurred at 5:10 am, after some smaller tremors.

The institute noted that the region is at high risk of earthquakes, pointing in particular to the earthquakes that struck Mugello in 1919, which was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Italy in the twentieth century.

Italy’s fire rescue team said it had received some calls from concerned residents, but no damage or injuries had been reported so far.
