ABU DHABI, 18th September, 2018 (WAM) – Emirates Water and Electricity Company, the leader in integrated coordination of planning, procurement and supply of water and electricity throughout the Emirates, has announced an invitation to developers and a coalition of developers to submit requests for expressions of interest in implementing a project to develop a new solar photovoltaic power plant in the Al Khazna area in the Emirate. This project is in line with the company’s strategic plan to develop new renewable energy plants with the aim of increasing the total capacity of solar energy generation to 7.3 gigawatts by 2030.
The Al Khazna solar photovoltaic station will have a capacity of 1,500 megawatts, and will be similar in size and production capacity to the two photovoltaic solar power stations in Al Dhafra and Al Ajban. Once the station enters full commercial operation, it will produce enough electricity to supply about 160,000 homes across the country, and it is expected that The station contributes to reducing about 2.4 million metric tons annually of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to removing about 470,000 cars from the road.
Othman Al Ali, CEO of Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said on this occasion: “Solar energy represents one of the basic pillars of the company’s strategic plan regarding the transition to a low-carbon system and the production of carbon-free electricity. We continue to invest strategically in developing world-leading renewable energy projects.” Which will play a major role in achieving our aspirations to meet 60% of the total energy demand in Abu Dhabi from renewable and clean energy sources by 2035, in addition to effectively contributing to achieving the sustainability goals of the UAE.”
He added: “By developing the Al Khazna solar photovoltaic station project, Emirates Water and Electricity Company has added a new world-leading solar energy project to the total number of existing projects in Abu Dhabi and the UAE in a way that reflects the country’s leadership in achieving the energy transition plan.”
He stressed that the concrete steps the company is taking today will make it a role model in the field of integrating solar energy and low-carbon technologies into the network. Pointing out that the company also plans to develop at least two additional solar photovoltaic projects with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts, which will enable it to commit to adding about 1 gigawatt. of solar capacity annually and over the next ten years.
He said: “We look forward to receiving expressions of interest from developers or a coalition of developers to develop the Al Khazna solar photovoltaic station project.”
The project includes developing, financing, building, operating, maintaining and owning the new station, in addition to the associated infrastructure works.
This project will be developed according to Abu Dhabi’s leading independent producer model, whereby the winning developer will enter into a long-term power purchase agreement with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company as the sole entity responsible for purchasing electricity in the emirate.
All developers or a coalition of developers wishing to participate must submit their expressions of interest to the Emirates Water and Electricity Company no later than October 2, 2023, at 12:00 noon Abu Dhabi time, by sending an electronic copy of their expressions of interest to: khaznapv. After reviewing the expressions of interest requests by Emirates Water and Electricity Company, the company will issue requests for a statement of qualifications to move to the next stage.
The request for a statement of qualifications will include providing additional details about the project, such as approved qualification criteria and tender procedures.
Requests for proposals will be issued from qualified companies after obtaining regulatory approvals for the project according to the established principles.
