Missed Opportunities: The Actress Who Turned Down a Role in a Soviet Classic

The screen star missed his chance.

The drama “Moscow Doesn’t Believe in Tears” became one of the most famous films of the USSR era. An army of fans is still showering the film with compliments, and viewers especially praise the lead actress Vera Alentova. However, initially Vladimir Menshov planned to work with another artist.

As it turned out, during the preparation of the script, he only saw Margarita Terekhova in the film. At that time, the artist was already an all-Union star and managed to work, for example, with Andrei Tarkovsky. Menshov dreamed of filming it, but the actress refused and instead chose the musical film “D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers.” After that, he offered the role to Irina Kupchenko, and only then to his wife Vera Alentova. And years later, Terekhova admitted that she would still like to play in such a famous film.

The audience, when these details became known, only supported Terekhova in her decision. In their opinion, the actress would definitely not have coped with the role, and her participation would have made the film worse.

“Katerina from Terekhova is no good”, “This is definitely not her film”, – say Internet users.
