Mondo Duplantis Sets New World Record of 6.23 in Eugene, USA

16th attempt.

Then Mondo Duplantis – finally – flew over 6.23 and polished off the world record.

– It was extra special with almost the whole family in the stands, he says to Sportbladet.

Ever since he jumped 6.22 in French Clermont-Ferrand in February, Mondo Duplantis has had his sights set on 6.23.

It has been delayed.

But after 15 failed attempts, the wait is over.

In the very last race of the season – the Diamond League Finals in Eugene, USA – it came loose and Duplantis managed 6.23.

In the first attempt, moreover.

And even then it wasn’t a perfect jump.

– No, it could have been much better, he says.

– I jumped with a softer pole (11.7 in flex). When I set the indoor world record last winter, I had a harder one (11.5). But it hasn’t worked so well outdoors, so I thought it was just as well to try it with the softer one. And it went well.

The brothers in place

Afterwards it was both joy and relief.

– Right now it’s just chaos in the brain, said Duplantis on SVT shortly afterwards.

When Sportbladet reaches him by phone last night, Swedish time, he says that it was extra special because almost the whole family was there and saw the world record.

Above all, the presence of both brothers Andreas and Antoine meant a lot.

– It was the first time they got to see a world record, so it’s special. Yes, the whole competition was special with the two of them in the stands.

But two people were missing.

– My sister Johanna and Desiré (the girlfriend) are not here. I miss those two. But there are quite a few from the family here, so now we’re going to chill and celebrate a bit.

Same arena

The competition was decided at the same arena where he won WC gold and set a world record last summer.

That time he jumped 6.21.

Now the record is 6.23 and the 23-year-old superstar now has a total of seven world records on the merit list.

What happens now? Vacation?

– Yes, I’m going home to Sweden again and will hang out with Desiré and have a little holiday. And maybe play a little golf.

Then a new season starts, indoors.

Then the new “super sticks” can go forward. The ones that are 5.25 meters long and which he has not yet used.

– I’m not quite there yet. It’s pretty close and I’ll see how it goes with training and everything this fall. But maybe a little more energy would work. We’ll have to wait until the indoor season, says Duplantis.
