The average salary for a side job as a cashier
There is a good chance that you too started your working life as a cashier or as a shelf stacker. Many 15/16 year olds choose to work in the supermarket. Although that was born more out of necessity – you are not allowed to do much else at that age, plus many other jobs often require previous work experience. But still, you want to earn some money to go out or go to the cinema, so you often end up at the supermarket in your area – even though the average salary of a cashier is not a big deal.
But research shows that there are major differences between the four largest supermarket chains, Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Lidl and ALDI, when it comes to pay for cashiers. We will explain those differences for you.
How much do you earn as a cashier at Albert Heijn, Jumbo, LIDL or ALDI?
At Albert Heijn, the largest chain in our country, as a 16-year-old you earn €81.12 gross per week with a 12-hour working week. This means a gross hourly wage of €6.76. This is even less with the Jumbo; Given the same data, they use a gross weekly wage of €77.88. This means a gross hourly wage of €6.49.
The discount supermarket Lidl is right in the middle in that regard. For example, the German supermarket chain uses a gross hourly wage of €6.58, which is €78.96 gross per week with a 12-hour working week. Lidl’s German brother, ALDI, takes the lead in terms of salary. For a 16-year-old with a 12-hour working week, they pay only €66.12 gross per week, which means an hourly wage of €5.51 gross. Admittedly, the image of ALDI is not fully representative, as they flirt with the fact that you can earn an extra bonus of up to € 16.53 if things are going well in your branch. But of course that’s not for everyone.
