Challenges and Disappointments of Covax: Global Access Mechanism for Covid-19 Vaccines

At least 6.05% of the region’s doses were acquired through Covax; Added to the meager impact of the mechanism is the expiration of more than 44 million vaccines in seven of the eight countries analyzed.

It emerged as a promise. That of fairer and more equitable access to vaccines for covid-19, in the face of the power of the large laboratories that dominated the market and their negotiations with world powers. The Global Access Mechanism to Covid-19 Vaccines – popularly known as Covax – was born in 2020, as part of the Access to Covid-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT Accelerator). The latter, in turn, was created by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) and the World Health Organization (WHO).…
