The course of the match
Arsenal appeared to control the match from the start but found it difficult to break down the host’s defense. The first attempt via Fabio Vieira’s shot in the 10th minute still bounced over the goal.
Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal the lead with a close-range shot in the 19th minute, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) annulled the goal because Eddie Nketiah was already offside in the process before the goal occurred.
Everton did not just stay behind. Sometimes they try to suppress it. Idrissa Gueye fired a long-range shot in the 31st minute, but it was saved by David Raya, who was Arsenal’s main goalkeeper in this match.
The visiting team again spread threats in the 40th minute. Ben White moved on the right side then fired a shot from the edge of the penalty box, but the direction of the ball was read by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford who swiftly secured the goal.
The 0-0 score lasted until halftime.
Arsenal almost scored an early goal at the start of the second half. Martin Odegaard fired a shot from close range in the 46th minute, but Pickford managed to block it. A minute later, Vieira’s shot went over the goal.
Arsenal’s efforts only bore fruit in the 69th minute. Through a short corner kick scheme, the Gunners continued to control the ball until Odegaard sent the ball to Bukayo Saka in the penalty box who then passed it to Leandro Trossard.
Without control of the ball, one shot from the Belgian midfielder hit the left post and went into Everton’s goal without Pickford being able to block it. Arsenal lead 1-0.
