Pep Guardiola Urges EU Recognition of Catalan as Official Language

Within the EU there are 24 official languages. One of them is not Catalan, which is mainly spoken in the region around Barcelona.

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola wants to change that. Therefore, he turns to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to ask for help.

– This is a message to the Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr. Ulf Kristersson. The Spanish government has requested that the EU accept Catalan as an official language along with the other 24 official European languages, he said in a video on his Instagram account.

He continues:

– For it to become a reality, all European countries must say yes. Our language is spoken by ten million people and is part of European culture and European heritage, which puts pride in. I ask Sweden to accept my language, Catalan, as an official language of the Union. Thanks so much.

The Guardiola video is part of a campaign by the non-profit organization Plataforma per la Llengua, which is pushing for the recognition of the Catalan language.

The last time the EU decided on a new official language was in 2013, when Croatian was recognized.
