Texas state attorney Ken Paxton has been acquitted on all counts in an impeachment case that has divided Republicans in the United States. He was charged with corruption.
The historic impeachment trial in the Texas Senate has been ongoing for two weeks. All but two of the 18 Republican senators voted for a full acquittal.
Paxton’s wife, Senator Angela Paxton, was not allowed to vote.
Saturday’s ruling is considered a victory for the hard right in Texas.
A majority of the state House of Representatives voted in May to suspend Paxton following widespread corruption allegations.
It happened after an investigative committee set up by Congress in Texas unanimously decided to indict Paxton. The committee was chaired by Paxton’s Republican party colleagues.
The indictment includes, among other things, corruption, misuse of public funds, false testimony and attempts to obstruct an investigation.
