Raymond van Barneveld pulled off a stunt on Saturday by beating world champion Michael Smith in AFAS Live. The Dutchman won 6-4 in Amsterdam. Michael van Gerwen has also advanced to the quarter-finals.

The 56-year-old Van Barneveld started strongly and immediately broke Smith, but the world number one immediately hit back. After that it went smoothly, until the Englishman’s last leg. ‘Barney’ broke his opponent again and then took the win.

Van Barneveld threw an average of 94.15 per three darts, while Smith stuck at an average of 92.36. The five-time world champion will play against Scot Peter Wright or Haupai Puha from New Zealand in the next round.

Van Gerwen started poorly in Amsterdam and had to leave the first three legs to O’Connor. The three-time world champion then recovered and took six of the last seven legs.

‘Mighty Mike’ averaged 93.57 per three arrows, compared to 91.65 for O’Connor. In the next round, Van Gerwen will fight the winner of the match between Dimitri Van den Bergh and Ricky Evans.

Title holder Gerwyn Price from Wales has already been eliminated. The number four in the world lost 6-4 to the Englishman Keegan Brown. Dirk van Duijvenbode, last year’s other finalist, previously lost to Danny Noppert. Noppert lost to Nathan Aspinall on Saturday evening: 6-3.
