HISTORY
Ferencváros and Norway’s Kristiansand will NOW MEET AGAIN after the women’s handball Champions League final played in Budapest on June 4. The parties will meet in the second round of the group stage of the new BL season on Saturday night at the home of the Scandinavians, who won the last three competitions. Both teams are trying to find success in the elite series after disappointment: Fradi suffered a heavy, 13-goal defeat against Metz of France at last weekend’s domestic start, while Vipers lost 30-26 away to Danish Ikast. The silver medalist in the Hungarian championship already showed better form during the week, fighting hard to beat Mosonmagyaróvár, who had previously beaten Győr, at the Népliget rally.
“We played a very bad game against Metz, it really wasn’t our true face, so one of the most important aspects of Wednesday’s championship was to fight all the way and give everything we have – said the Serbian manager of the FTC, Andrea Lekics, who converted ten of his 15 attempts against Óvár. – In recent years, the team has already shown that it can get back on its feet after being out of its comfort zone. This was also the case after the defeat by Metz, the main thing was to recover from the bad situation. We were nervous, but we knew that a real championship rally was waiting for us and we had to fight all the way. Mosonmagyaróvár is a very good team, they also beat Győr recently, but we played a good match against them. I am glad that the Hungarian championship is getting stronger and stronger. It wasn’t easy to get the two points on Wednesday, but we performed evenly.”
The classic conductor of the FTC, who turned 36 last week, considers the victory against Óvár to be especially important mentally:
“Sometimes you lose, like we did against Metz, but it really doesn’t matter how you go down. Everything fell apart that day. When you don’t show the self that you are, you always want to show what you’re capable of, that you can move on even after a bad performance or weekend.”
Ole Gustav Gjekstad, the successful Norwegian coach who won five league titles with the team between 2018 and 2023 and won the last three BL competitions, took over the management of the Danish Odense from the summer, and the baton was handed over to his assistant, who previously worked in Mosonmagyaróvár, Győr and the Russian It fell into the hands of Slovakian Tomás Hlavaty, who also works at Rostov-Don. Among others, the Czech Markéta Jerábková, who played a decisive role, left the squad, but the Dutch world class player, Lois Abbingh, arrived.
“Everyone in international women’s handball is aware of the power that the Vipers have been in recent times Lekics continued. – There have been some changes in his frame, but he continues to play great handball. The Norwegians also lost in the first round against Ikast, which I think is a big surprise, although looking back at that game, the Danes’ goalkeeper gave an incredible performance, even though the Vipers had no chances. We have to go at a good pace in attack, and we need a lot of strength in defense, because the Norwegians are excellent in one-on-one actions. If we get the ball, we can’t give Kristiansand the opportunity to quickly change their formation between attack and defense. If we rush forward and lead quick starts, there may be a chance for the opponent to have players on the pitch who feel less comfortable in defense. This can be crucial, Ikast also achieved success with this game. At home, the pressure will be on the Norwegians, the burden of victory will be on them, they are the chances of the match, but I am confident that we have left the bad memories of the last round behind us, and we will do everything for the best result.” (P.
