Protests Erupt as Anna Netrebko Returns to Berlin State Opera as Lady Macbeth

On September 15, opera diva Anna Netrebko appeared on the stage of the Berlin State Opera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden) for the first time in the last year and a half as Lady Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera. Fueled by the previously expressed dissatisfaction of Kyiv officials, a group of Ukrainians living in Berlin went out to protest against the walls of the theater building.

According to BBC, protesters chanted “No Netrebko” and called for “not giving a stage to Russian propaganda.” The Berlin police officers who kept order ensured the safety of the spectators who came to the performance. Special fences were installed to separate Ukrainians from theater visitors.

At the same time, tickets for all performances of Macbeth with the participation of Netrebko have been sold out. The premiere was also sold out. The soprano will take the stage on September 17, 21 and 23.

Artistic Director of the Berlin Opera Matthias Schulz urged “not to make artists scapegoats.” At the same time, on one of the portals of civil initiatives, a number of Berlin residents came out in support of Netrebko. So far, 2,172 people have signed the petition.

As reported EADaily earlier the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry released an angry statement in which it called for the cancellation of Netrebko’s participation in upcoming performances.

As a sign of protest on the day of the premiere of Macbeth, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Alexey Makeev and senator Joe Chalo They demonstratively visited an anti-Russian exhibition in the building of the Humboldt University, which is located exactly opposite the Berlin Opera.
