When the church employees in Sørfold in Nordland went to work on Thursday morning, they got a nasty surprise.
During the afternoon on Wednesday or during the night, someone had overturned ten tombstones in the cemetery and broken windows on a tractor and on an outbuilding.
Church guardian Beate Breivik says that she is upset by the incident.
– It’s just sad. That someone gets into the cemetery and does something like that, she tells Dagbladet.
It is Salt post who mentioned the matter first.

Reported to the police
Breivik says that she has worked at the church for five and a half years, and that neither she nor the colleagues who have worked there have experienced anything similar before.
She doesn’t think the overturned headstones are carefully selected.
– I think it’s mischief, and that’s also the first thing the police asked us about. There are tombstones in between, so it does not refer to any specific people.
She says that the vandalism has been reported to the police, and encourages people who may have seen something to contact the police.
The police confirm to Dagbladet that they have received a report of the vandalism.
When Dagbladet talks to Breivik on Friday morning, she says that the church is now contacting families and relatives to offer to put up the gravestones again.

Affects an already poor economy
The demolition has aroused strong feelings in several people, says Breivik.
– The vast majority are very sorry that it has happened. They think it is sad that people go into the cemetery and knock over stones.
– Some were also annoyed that such a thing could happen.
The church has also received calls from families who are afraid that the headstones of their loved ones are among those that have been knocked over.
Where the gravestones can easily be put back up, it is worse with the tractor door and the broken window. “It will cost a bit”, according to the church warden.
– We are a church and basically have poor finances, so this goes beyond something else that we should actually be doing.
Now she hopes those who have committed the rampages will take responsibility.
– It is allowed to come and apologize.
– If someone comes and does it – will they be forgiven?
– Of course they will be forgiven if they report. Of course they will get it from the church.
