The Run: Young Man Arrested After Dramatic Escape from Court

Run

Updated 09/15/23 at 5:52 p.m.

The young man will be tried again for the acts of aggravated theft and violence at the origin of his first arrest

The run is finished. Saturday afternoon, a young person arrested, who appeared detained at the Bobigny court, had climbed the glass box in full audience when a judge ordered his placement in pre-trial detention. The police officers were unable to catch up with the 18-year-old young adult and he crossed the court hall on foot before fleeing by metro, the station being a few minutes away.

Entrusted to the Montreuil police station, the hunt to find him resulted in his arrest in the same city on Wednesday. “He was wanted, the police knew him,” declared the public prosecutor of BobignyEric Mathais.

Tried on Friday in immediate appearance, the young man was sentenced to 12 months in prison for escape as well as two months in prison for death threats and insulting a person holding public authority, for the rebellion opposed at the time of his arrest this week. The sentence was accompanied by a committal warrant.

“The penalty of escape, when prosecuted with other offenses, must be the subject of a specific conviction,” clarified Eric Mathais. The escapee will be judged later for the acts of aggravated theft and violence against law enforcement who had motivated his initial arrest.
