When the world is in New York these days United Nations SDG Summit Dresden scientists will also be there to discuss the goals for sustainable development of the 2030 Agenda. At the so-called SDG Action Weekend, which accompanies the summit, they will contribute their expertise in particular to the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) “High-quality education”. Dr. André Lindner, head of department and international consultant in the Construction & Environment department at TU Dresden, initiated an official side event in New York as part of this Action Weekend and organized it together with the United Nations University. On September 16th, experts will speak here about the enormous importance of higher education in the field of environmental management for sustainable development, especially in the global south. On the one hand, the consequences of the climate crisis are particularly serious here, and on the other hand, the developing and emerging countries with their young populations have great potential.
In his keynote speech, André Lindner will show what contribution the TU Dresden makes together with its cooperation partners in this area. The Center for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) has existed since 1977 and has since trained around 2,700 people from 145 countries to become environmental management experts. Many of them are now influential representatives of their countries – including at the UN.
Another successful model is the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Center – Aachen, Bangkok, Chennai, Dresden (ABCD Center) led by TUD. With the focus on water, the focus here is on adapting to global climate change – including in a planned joint master’s program, research partnerships and transfer activities.
As a close partner of TU Dresden and in particular the area of construction and environment, representatives of the United Nations University – Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-Flores) are also on site. Prof. Daniel Karthe presents the joint Ph.D. program “Resource Nexus for Sustainability Transformations” (NEXtra). It is aimed at doctoral students from the global south who, after graduating, are expected to drive sustainable change in their home countries.
