JawaPos.com – September 15 is celebrated as World Lymphoma Awareness Day. In this regard, the Cancer Information Support Center (CISC) together with the Ministry of Health and Takeda are calling for early detection of lymphoma and access to more innovative treatment.
Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Eva Susanti, said that education related to lymphoma, especially Hodgkin’s lymphoma, starting from risk factors, prevention, to innovative therapy needs to continue.
“Access to innovative therapies for Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients must be made easier,” he told reporters, Friday (15/9).
He explained that Hodgkin’s lymphoma is one of two types of cancer in the lymph node system. In Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cancer occurs due to mutations in B cells in the lymphatic system. The sign is the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells through pathological examination.
In line with that, Consultant Hematology and Medical Oncology dr. Andhika Rachman explained that Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer generally spreads gradually through the lymph vessels.
“In advanced stages it can spread through the bloodstream to vital organs such as the liver, lungs and spinal cord, although it is very rare,” he said.

As for most cases of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, said Dr. Andhika, infects young people aged 15-30 years.
“Because the immune system has not yet been fully formed, it easily undergoes changes,” he explained.
However, late adulthood (> 55 years) is also at risk. Biologically, Dr. Andhika said that the disease was different from what happened at a young age. It is suspected that there is involvement of various factors, including cellular histology, Epstein-Barr virus, and others.
Regarding treatment, CISC Chair Aryanthi Baramuli Putri said that currently, treatment for cancer in Indonesia requires a lot of money. Therefore, various innovations and collaboration regarding treatment must continue to be pursued.
